The Gregson Cricket Ball

- and a jolly good time was had by all, especially those like me who got seriously stuck into the Cotes de Rhone Villages (mind you I was about to become part of a Morris Dance Team interpretation of Bob the Builder, or was that just a frightening hallucination).

Cricket Sunday 24 June
The Old Peculiars had their buts well and truly kicked at this annual grudge match which has been going on for so many years that I can't remember. The game was won for the Gregson in amazing style by two of the GCC horsemen of the apoplexy Graeme Kirk and Richard Dow. Graeme taking the wining run off a suicidal call from his playing partner. The Old Pecks may never live it down. Perhaps we should let the Gregson Juniors have a shot at them next time?

Cricket 9 June 2001

Despite the best wiles of their leader Canon Peter Ballard's 11 lost with just 7 balls to play in a splendid example of timed cricket played the way it used to be played (in the days before underarm bowling was outlawed, and the dubious pea-roller no-ball law introduced). The Gregson bowling attack was capped off by Alex Dow (age 11) and Callum Paylor (12). The Gregson batting  was held together by the four Horsemen of the Appoplexy who amassed 25% of the winning total.

Cricket Sunday 3 May:
The four Batspeople of the Apoplex were reduced to three in this latest match from the outstanding 2001 Gregson team, their powers were thus reduced to zilch and they selflessly threw themselves onto their respective swords in order to let the Gregson tail amass a total worth chasing. Didn't quite work though.

Gregson Football Sunday League the team to fear ...

The story so far...

Jungle fever struck at the heart of Greggies opening match against Red Star (3rd in the league last year).. The grass was too long, the ref too shortsighted, no way that was a Penalty (Conceded by Phil Nev lookalike Mick S), sloppy defending gave the home team Red Star a well-earned if not as easy victory 2.0 over the Gregson. MOTM(Manofthe match) went to John Dudgeon for sterling work in Midfield.

The second game against the same opposition at Far Moor was a totally different kettle of footie, the Gregson felt hard done by for their opening fixture put in a great performance against Red Star last Thursday.

One nil up from the silky lob over the keeper by our renegade striker Dom Williams gave the visitors a fright, however frantic defending conceded the equalizer just before halftime. The second half Red Star were lucky not to concede a penalty or two if it wasn't for the great refereeing of their team Manager CJ who couldn't see what an obvious penalty it was. However Gascoigne-Style Paul T got the Gregson a well earned second and that should have secured a victory were it for a moment of madness after sustained pressure Red Star got a damn equaliser.. By erk I were as sick as a parrot, victory should have been ours. It ended 2-2 with Ade Wilson getting the MOTM award for verbous-ing work in defence.

Today, Sunday we played the hardnuts from the Bluewanker, oh sorry, blue anchor with barely half the original Gregson team, 3 strikers out thru injury, 3 key midfielders out on the razzle somewhere else our makeshift team were up against it. Some dispute over the starting lineup gave the visiting team the advantage. Plus they had just signed a midfielder from Morecambe FC who was erm 'quite good' and set up the visitors first. 1-0 down at halftime, Jez called upon the reserves to steady the ship, yours truly and Andy GIbson, 2 oldtimers of grace and experience inspired the team for at least 20 minutes to make a fight of it. Dribbling better than his 6 yr old Tony Herbert scored , played thru by Andy G after Rich W ( Moi!) played the killer ball out of defence. This gave the Gregson an equal footing. However once the old Seadogs Rich and Andy ran out of puff, Blue Wa..err Anchor took the initiative and after a mixup between Keeps and Ade(Really Heavynight)Wilson we gifted their nippy no11 a walk on part (in the demise of another sturdy performance) making it 2-1 BlUE youknow.

Just when it looked like a narrow victory, up pops up goal of the season, thier no7 volleyed home to make it 3-1 Blue Anchor.. it was positively MichaelOwen like, the bloke couldn't do it again, it was that good. MOTM award goes to Mark Nixon for his tenacious work on the pitch and the fine work he's done off the pitch providing short tightening excitement by way of his girlfriend who did to all intents and purposes distract most of the footballers on the pitch.

If anyone wants to cheer on the boys our next match is on Thursday against the New Inn at FarMoor K-Off 6pm, we are very much hoping to make it a victory, lord knows ( and some dodgy refs know) The Gregson deserve better..

24.7.00 Gregson Centre Football Club (GCFC)

The Gregson Centre Football Club has now affiliated to Lancaster's Sunday league for next season. Our 'local' pitch is the Far Moor Pitch at the top of Quernmore Road (past Nightingale Hall Farm and ahead of you as you turn off to Lancaster Farms Young Offenders Institution) a pitch well known for the thick and adhering quality of its mud.

Those of you who have trouble visualising Gregson members moving fast for anything other than a 'last orders' call will be surprised to learn than in our first pre-season friendly the GCFC comprehensively thrashed the Lancaster NORWEB Eleven 3:2. And in last Sunday's Kirkby Lonsdale six-a-side competition last we marginally lost both games - 2:0 the first and the second on penalties (a moral victory for the Gregson on our first six-a-side turn-out).

The team has applied for a grant to buy kit and provide for some professional training from the National Lottery. We are currently looking for a major team sponsor to help fund our predicted meteoric rise through the division.

Membership fees to join the GCFC are currently £15 (including Gregson Membership). For which you get a constitution, officers to look after your every need and the chance to get down and get dirty throughout the winter. What more could you want?

Anyone interested in joining in GCFC football madness should contact Club Officer Tony Ashton via the Gregson or by email mailto:richard@gregson.co.uk.
